Event: Film Screening: The Other Final (Documentary): 9th of June 2009

the other final

I was asked by a member of The Surgery to write some ‘copy’ for a flyer they were putting out. It’s for a film screening they’ve organised for a documentary called ‘The Other Final‘.

I gave them this:

Bend it like Bhutan, or the Full Montserrat?

1. “Im a loser baby so why don’t you …organise a game of soccer match for me in the middle of nowhere and make a documentary on it”. This is exactly what Johan Kramer, director of the offbeat advertising agency Kessel Kramer did after his beloved team, the Netherlands, failed to make World Cup finals. While leaving the Dutch National team to lick their wounds, he organised a final between FIFA’s two lowest ranking teams, Bhutan and Montserrat*. Dave Bell, the Creative director of the innovative often bizarre agency behind this film, is in town to do a Q&A for a one-off special screening at the Guildford Gallery. Here’s a question for you to throw at him for starters: Can advertisers, whose mode of operation is persuasion and spin, make good documentaries, a media form concerned with veracity and fidelity? From the look of The Other Final, maybe they can.

*A country so off the register they don’t even appear in our spell check.

2. What do you do after a failure? Cry? Feel sorry for yourself? Give up? Or transport the two lowest ranking soccer teams in the world to the landlocked kingdom of Bhutan for a showdown? If your Johan Kramer, founder of the bizarrely brilliant Kessel Kramer, it’s the latter (but probably a bit of the first two as well). Lucky for us he filmed the results, and the outcome of this impromptu encounter between the nations of Bhutan and Monserrat is truly inspiring. The Creative director of the innovative communications agency behind the film, Dave Bell, is in town for a one-off screening and Q&A session at the Guildford Gallery in June.  Oh and check out the dizzying exhibition of Kessel Kramer posters running from the 5th -14th of June.

It didn’t really suit their purposes.

Anyway, my rejection shouldn’t be reason not to go along to the screening. Its on at the Guildford Lane Gallery on the 9th of June, tickets are $25. Here’s the trailer.

Kessel Kramer has a very amusing website that references 90’s home made website in much the same way Tim and Eric reference the degraded video production in Public Broadcast Service Tv-shows. {link}

    gee thanks Ronan. Now i won’t have to resort to my controversial waterboarding technique to get you to write ‘copy’. Hope the rejection scars heal in time for the screening

    Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing
    a blog post or vice-versa? My blog discusses a lot of the same subjects as yours and I believe
    we could greatly benefit from each other.

    If you are interested feel free to send me an email.

    I look forward to hearing from you! Great blog by
    the way!
