MIFF review: 10 conditions of love

26 Jul

Genre: documentary

Incredible. Glad to say my first film at miff this year is a must see.

A moving portrait of an inspirational figure and a topic most of us don’t know about, but really should. This film stands as searing indictment of China’s ‘liberation’ East Turkistan (an area now known as Xinjiang, ‘New Territory’), it’s brutal repression of a democratic voice in the region, and Rabiya Kadeer’s extreme bravery and determination in the face of powerful opposition. None of our lives match the integrity, intelligence and passion shown by this extraordinary figure.  Well maybe there are a few of you out there, but I certainly don’t. It’s always a humbling experience seeing what one life can achieve, and Jeff Daniels’s film has me re-evaluating what I am going to commit myself to at the end of my degree.

All 380 seats of the Sunday night session were sold out, in part due to the publicity given by China’s attempts to have the film withdrawn.

Censorship: MIFF conflict with China throws festival into chaos

22 Jul

MIFF is in an 11th hour scramble to fill in gaps created by China’s withdrawal of 6 titles 3 titles/ 6 sessions from the festival, in protest over the inclusion of 10 conditions of love. The AGE covered this today but most sources cited were unable to comment, however Richard Moore called China’s behaviour, “uncalled for”. I’ll have the full list up some time today, though I am so dizzy I can hardly see what I am writing.

I reckon this is censorship; who’s miffed? Along with Looking for Eric and Blank City, that brings the total to 8 5 films removed from the festival this year (Though the reasons for Blank City still remain a mystery).

What I’m seeing at MIFF 2009: Ronan

19 Jul

It was very tough, but i have made my bookings for MIFF 2009. What a great lineup of films this year. There is also a fair bit of controversy already.

Ken Loach. Not a fan of MIFF

Ken Loach. Not a fan of MIFF

Iconic Miserabalist director Ken Loach has pulled out his film, Looking for Eric, in a protest over MIFF accepting sponsorship money from the Israel government. {link}. This is a little unfair, given MIFF isn’t and doesn’t take sides over the Israel / Palestine conflict, instead choosing to show films from both POV, as long as they are well made. Correct me if I am wrong.

The Chinese Government is putting pressure on MIFF to remove the first film on my line up, 10 Conditions Of Love. {link}. MIFF have subsequently made extra sessions of this available, filling in some gaps on the program. A not so subtle response to China’s demand perhaps…

And does anyone know why Blank City  (featuring Deborah Harry) has been removed? I really wanted to see it.

Sorry about the screwy formatting below:
