What I’m seeing at MIFF 2009: Ronan

19 Jul

It was very tough, but i have made my bookings for MIFF 2009. What a great lineup of films this year. There is also a fair bit of controversy already.

Ken Loach. Not a fan of MIFF

Ken Loach. Not a fan of MIFF

Iconic Miserabalist director Ken Loach has pulled out his film, Looking for Eric, in a protest over MIFF accepting sponsorship money from the Israel government. {link}. This is a little unfair, given MIFF isn’t and doesn’t take sides over the Israel / Palestine conflict, instead choosing to show films from both POV, as long as they are well made. Correct me if I am wrong.

The Chinese Government is putting pressure on MIFF to remove the first film on my line up, 10 Conditions Of Love. {link}. MIFF have subsequently made extra sessions of this available, filling in some gaps on the program. A not so subtle response to China’s demand perhaps…

And does anyone know why Blank City  (featuring Deborah Harry) has been removed? I really wanted to see it.

Sorry about the screwy formatting below:

hey thanks for kind words and links.
I find the whole program terrifying. Not that it’s bad, I just get crippled with indecision and visions of being trapped in a tedious art film.
    Oh well.

I missed the NZFF screenings of Moon.
I’m going to see Unmade Beds on Sunday (before Antichrist) at NZFF.
Love Exposure is 4 HOURS LONG!

I know! Reckon i’ll get my moneys worth with that one.

Though, i may just end up trapped in a tedious art film.

I will also be going to Treeless Mountain on the 30th!

can’t afford much more….oh i got free tix to see Alphaville on Sunday…although last time i tried watching it at home i got terribly bored…

PS. my picture is the best. why are you an octopus?!

  6. Ronan Macewan July 22, 2009 at 4:29 pm #

I am an octopus because I like the octopus.

PPS. I am annoyed they’re not showing Dinner with Murakami!
I even emailed the people to put it in the program…and emailed the director to tell them to enter it in…(they wrote back and said they would!)

It was on at a doco festival when i was overseas two years ago but i missed it. It’s probably too old for them to show…

Pony I have booked. I had quite a few of the films you are seeing on my shortlist. Missed out on Moon though:( Will compare notes and sit with you. Hopefully you can help with my crowd/smell of crowds induced claustrophobia. Also I never look at how long films run for I had no idea love exposure was 4 hours!! I am thinking of taking in some whisky to make the experience more bearable, or perhaps a light up game of backgammon? Would that be annoying?

  9. Ronan Macewan July 23, 2009 at 7:08 pm #

whisky is good. Glad to see someone else will be suffering love exposure with me and Jen. i’ll bring a torch and pop a matic trouble, i’m sure people won’t mind. MIFF crowds are usually very tolerant patient group…courgh.

What would be excellent, is if people start posting up there lists of films on this comments thread.

    Go!

    …carn.
